Is Studio You designed to replace PE teachers?
Not at all! PE teachers are integral to the successful delivery of Studio You and play a crucial role in influencing all students’ enjoyment of physical activity. Studio You is here to help PE teachers enhance their lesson delivery specifically for the least active girls, whether that be learning a new discipline alongside students, acting as their cheerleader or correcting their technique.
What age group is the content designed for?
Studio You has been designed for students aged 11-16 using insight from both PE teachers and teenage girls within KS3 and KS4. It has the ultimate ambition of making sure every girl, regardless of background or ability, can enjoy PE – and reap the rewards of getting active. Content has been grouped according to relevant key stage and you can filter lessons according to which key stage you are teaching. However all the content is flexible to use in the way that works best for your students.
How can I use Studio You with SEND students?
We want to make sure our content as accessible as possible, no matter what your students’ ability. Each lesson features instructors who will demonstrate different moves or adaptations where needed. We have created discipline cards for each activity type, supported by Activity Alliance, the the national charity and leading voice for disabled people in sport and activity. These discipline cards will help you adapt the resource for different students where possible, with movement modifications and inclusion guidelines following the STEP model. You can find these linked to on our individual lesson pages and on our ‘Supporting resources’ page.
Can I use Studio You lessons with mixed gender or boys' groups?
Of course! Although Studio You has been designed with teenage girls in mind, any gender can take part in the lesson and it’s a great way for all students to learn new disciplines. Our findings showed us that girls feel more confident taking part in physical activity when they are in single gender classes however, so we recommend splitting classes where possible.
Who created the content?
Developed by education specialists, Hopscotch, in partnership with This Girl Can, and funded by Sport England via The National Lottery, Studio You is designed to give you all the resources and inspiration you need to get every girl moving. All of our instructors are qualified in the disciplines they teach which include yoga, Pilates, combat, barre and more. You can find out more about each instructor on our ‘Meet our instructors’ page.
How can I use Studio You to help plan my lessons?
You can choose from individual lessons in specific disciplines or pick from our readymade schemes of work that focus on achieving specific objectives over a number of weeks. You can save your favourite lessons for use later and create your own personal collections, making lesson planning for individual classes or year groups so much simpler. Check out our ‘Extra activities’ page for ideas on how to put what students have learned in the lessons into practice and encourage the class to work together with some fun challenges.
How do I save a lesson?
It’s simple! Under each video lesson is a ‘Save this lesson’ button. Click that and you’ll be able to either create a new folder to save it in or add it to an existing folder. You can also save our downloadable resources, like our suite of discipline cards, by following the same process. You can change the names of your different folders to keep track of which students groups they’re for. You’ll be able to find all your saved content on the ‘Saved lessons’ page in your account dashboard. Great for planning the term ahead!
Do we need equipment to join in?
We have tried to keep the amount of equipment needed to a minimum to offer greater flexibility. However, some of the lessons and/or disciplines, such as yoga, may require a mat. We have some fitness content which includes optional use of resistance bands. If equipment is needed, this is clearly indicated on the lesson page so you can plan ahead.
Where should I start?
We recommend starting off by finding out more about the mission of Studio You and insight into the challenges we know some girls face with PE. Then, explore the different video lessons and supporting teacher resources to see what might most appeal to your students. We’ve found offering girls a choice and voice when it comes to deciding what they do in PE is great way to get them invested and interested.
Can I add subtitles to my lessons?
Yes, you have the option to turn subtitles on or off so that everyone can clearly follow along with the lessons and movements.
How many video lessons can I use for free?
You can watch and share as many videos as you want with your classes for free, there’s no limit to the amount of lessons you can participate in! Make sure you keep an eye out for more content being added that you can try with your class.
Can I use video lessons offline?
If you have Wi-Fi challenges within your school, there is an option to download individual video lessons by clicking the ‘Download’ on the video lesson player. We’d recommend that you keep coming back to the platform though to check out the latest content.
